What motivated you to leave your secure job and start your own business in the tile industry at such a young age?
My decision to leave my secure job stemmed from a blend of passion and timing. Working at an independent tile retailer, under the guidance of my father, PJ Mathur, I discovered a deep interest in architecture and interior design. I realised the tile industry was about enhancing spaces and prioritising customer satisfaction, which inspired me. By 2011, I felt confident in my knowledge of the industry, its products, and key manufacturers. At just 24, I decided it was time to take the leap and create something that reflected my vision of luxury and design. If not now then when?
How did your early experiences in the tile industry shape your approach to running Design Di Lusso, and what were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the startup phase?
My early experiences in the tile industry taught me the significance of understanding both the product and the people I worked with. The industry is highly technical, so attention to detail is essential. Collaborating closely with architects and interior designers allowed me to see their projects required not just beautiful tiles but tailored solutions that fit specific visions and budgets. Financial challenges were significant during the startup phase; without capital for a showroom, I had to manage costs creatively. I worked from home, met clients on-site, and took a part-time job to support myself while building the business.
Can you share how your attention to detail and passion for architecture and design have influenced the growth and success of your business?
My attention to detail is crucial to Design Di Lusso’s success. I focus on the texture, finish, and specifications of every tile, allowing us to act as consultants that elevate our clients' designs. This meticulous approach, reflected in our 5-star Google reviews, showcases our commitment to quality and service. My passion for architecture drives me to curate unique collections that stand out, attracting both design professionals and discerning homeowners seeking exceptional craftsmanship and practical aesthetics.
How has the expansion of Design Di Lusso in recent years changed how you approach the business, and what’s your vision for its future growth?
The recent expansion of Design Di Lusso has allowed us to showcase our tiles more effectively through a two-floor showroom. This has enhanced our visibility and enabled a more personal connection with our customers. It has shifted my role from being a solo entrepreneur to managing a small, passionate team. We’ve also expanded into bathroom fixtures, offering complete solutions, which was a logical next step. Looking ahead, I envision growing our online presence with curated, customisable bathroom packages, allowing the magic of DDL Tiles to reach people's home nationwide.
How has your family, particularly your father, influenced your entrepreneurial journey, and what role has their support played in the growth of Design Di Lusso?
My father has profoundly influenced my entrepreneurial journey. He introduced me to the tile industry and provided invaluable guidance along the way. When he joined me as the first official hire at Design Di Lusso in 2019, it was a full-circle moment for us. His unwavering support, both personally and professionally, has been essential, and I don’t believe I could have built the business without him. My family has always been there to cheer me on during tough times and celebrate our successes, providing a strong foundation that has supported Design Di Lusso’s growth from the beginning. A gift that was given to me when I first opened my showroom, from my sister, her husband, my nephew and my niece is what reminds me of how far I have come and it keeps me going, it reminds me that with enough effort, hard work and a little bit of luck - anything is possible - please see the photo attached.
