Shantaben Patel, a driving force behind the freedom movement in Bhadran, passed away on February 11, 2024, at the age of 103, leaving behind a profound legacy. She radiated a commanding presence that earned widespread respect. With the passing away of Shantaben, people of Bhadran experienced a profound sorrow, akin to the loss of their beloved mother. Throughout her life, she was an inspiration to the entire village, providing warmth and guidance. Despite a short illness, she remained healthy and continued working for the well-being of the village until her last breath.

Reflecting on her life story, one's imagination runs wild. From halting Subhash Chandra Bose's car before independence to imparting valuable lessons even to prominent leaders, her wisdom and intelligence were evident. She devoted her wealth for the country and village development and even served time in jail alongside Gandhiji.

At the remarkable age of 103, her dignified presence left a lasting impression on many politicians. She confidently offered advice to leaders on village and district affairs, which they readily accepted and followed.

Bhadran village gained additional fame due to Shantaben. She was one such warrior who followed the footsteps of Subhash Chandra Bose and a fierce fighter of the Azad Hind Army. Shantaben was also arrested for her involvement in the ‘Quit India’ movement in 1942 and served imprisonment in Yerawada.

Shantaben was known for her unwavering commitment to her country, homeland and personal principles. Once, during a convention in Haripura, she halted the convoy of Netaji Subhashchandra Bose because Indian national flag was missing from his vehicle. Only after the flag was affixed to his car did Shantaben permitted Subhash Chandra Bose to proceed. Despite being reprimanded for the absence of the tricolor, towering figures like Subhash Chandra Bose respected Shantaben's stand.

Upon his belated arrival at the convention, Mahatma Gandhi inquired Subhash Chandra Bose about the reason for the delay, to which Bose recounted his encounter with Shantaben. On hearing of her actions, Mahatma Gandhi commended Shantaben for her dedication to upholding the honor of the flag. He remarked, "The nation is enriched by the presence of such valiant women.”

Shantaben often emphasised that Bhadran village made significant contributions to the freedom struggle. Notably, icons like Gandhiji, Sardar Patel and Subhash Chandra Bose had visited Bhadran as part of the freedom movement, in which she actively participated.

Shantaben, a devoted patriot, made significant contributions to the freedom movement alongside Gandhiji. She supported the 'Non-Violence' movement by selling her jewellery. Shantaben would passionately recount her memories and experiences from the 1936 freedom movement to the villagers and youth, motivating them to forge ahead by leading through their own actions.

Inspired by the remarkable personality of Shantaben, former Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, Rajendra Trivedi, paid her a visit. He was deeply impressed by Shantaben's anecdotes, tact, and remarkable memory. She emphasised that Kandarai village had been the development center of Bhadran since 1936, noting that the village saw its first drainage line installed in that year. In the course of the visit, Shantaben also secured a commitment from Rajendra Trivedi to conduct a survey of Bhadran city.
