As infections soared in the last seven days at the greatest rate since the third wave in January 2022, India recorded over 3,800 new cases of Covid-19, the highest daily total in six months. Almost 18,450 new cases were reported in India during the course of the last seven days (March 26–April 1), a 2. 1x rise over the previous seven-day total of 8,781. Case doubling time has now decreased to under seven days. The brief third wave was the last time the daily total increased by more than double in a week.

The highest spikes in infections in the past week were seen in Kerala, Goa and the northern states such as Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. In most of these states, the last seven days’ total was three times higher than the previous seven-day tally.

While the virus has been spreading for a few weeks in the western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, the number of new cases remained comparatively high there. While indicating a reduction in Telangana and the beginnings of a surge in Andhra Pradesh, infections continued to climb steadily in the southern states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
