New Delhi: The Election Commission stated that assembly election in Karnataka will be held on May 10 to choose a new government and representatives to its 224-seat parliament. On May 13, the results will be declared.

The statement coincides with a high-stakes political contest between the BJP, which is in power, and the Congress and Janata Dal (JD-S), which are the opponents. With accusations of corruption and racial polarisation on the rise, the BJP, led by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, wants to hold onto power in the state.

The last assembly election in Karnataka was held in May 2018, which resulted in a hung assembly. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 104 seats but fell short of a majority.

Victory would be a big morale booster for BJP

By running a vigorous campaign, making last-minute quota adjustments, and expanding Hindu consolidation outside of the coastal zone, Modi had five years prior turned things around. The BJP would benefit greatly from a victory in Karnataka in its upcoming contests with the Congress in MP, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh.

JD-S, though no longer the force it used to be, is determined to make a three-legged horse by holding on to its constituency among the Vokkaliggas and cornering a slice of Muslim votes. Many of the regional formations, which are opposed to BJP but are loath to be conscripted into Congress’s ambition, would rejoice to see it throwing the spanner in Rahul's works. To win a majority, both Congress and BJP must perform well in the old Mysuru region, which has 61 seats, as well as other regions such as Kittur-Karnataka and Kalyana-Karnataka. If BJP fails to perform well in this region, it will struggle to reach the 113-seat threshold.
