A 20-year-old woman was killed after her scooter was hit by a car that dragged her for almost 4 km — from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala. In some parts on the Kanjhawala stretch, where the woman was dragged, there were large rocks and pieces of concrete.
The incident took place in the wee hours of last Sunday, which was New Year Day. Police who investigated the matter said that the body was found almost an hour later. The victim, Anjali Singh, who was an event organiser was returning from work at the time the incident happened. Five men who were inside the car have been arrested in connection with the unpleasant incident.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called the incident "rarest of rare" crime and urged Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to take "exemplary action'' against the accused. "It is a rarest of rare crime. I don't know where society is heading. I have learnt that the postmortem is underway, " he said. Calling it an "extremely shameful" incident, he said, "I appeal that the accused, despite whatever influence they might hold, be given the strictest punishment."
The accused have been recognized as Deepak Khanna (26), Gramin Seva auto driver; Amit Khanna (25), who worked in a bank on a contract basis; Krishan (27), who worked at Spanish Culture Centre; Mithun (26), a hairdresser and Manoj Mittal (27), a ration dealer. The car belonged to a relative of Amit Khanna’s friend.
The woman resided in Sultanpuri with her family and was unmarried. She is survived by her mother and five siblings. The woman's mother claims that the males sexually attacked the woman as soon as they found her naked. However, police have refuted the victim's mother's assertion.
