Indian wicketkeeper and batsman Rishabh Pant was seriously injured in a road accident while driving home from Delhi to Roorkee at Narsan, Haridwar district, about 90kms from Dehradun. As per police’s report, he was alone in the car when his Mercedes GLE car hit the divider railings on the Delhi-Haridwar highway at around 5.30am (GST 4:00 am). The car then turned a few times before turning into a ball of fire.
Swapn Kishor Singh, superintendent of police, Haridwar (rural), who was among the cops who rushed on the spot, stated that "Hearing a loud sound of the accident, nearby villagers along with the local cops, rushed to the spot and pulled him out of the car. He was then rushed to a nearby hospital from where he was referred to a major hospital in Dehradun."
Another police officer, privy to the accident while informing about the possible reason behind the accident, said, "Pant probably fell asleep while driving because there was no roadside fog that may have reduced visibility. In addition to having bruises on his back, he has a cut on his left brow and a right knee ligament injury." He added "The charred car has been taken away for further investigation. It is not known whether the airbags had opened or not because nothing is left inside to verify that. A probe is on."
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami tweeted in Hindi," Praying for the speedy recovery of cricketer Rishabh Pant, who was injured in a vehicle accident, have directed the officials to ensure all possible arrangements for his treatment."
The forthcoming ODI and T20I series between India and Sri Lanka at home will not feature Pant. He was slated to leave for Bengaluru to be at the National Cricket Academy for strength and conditioning programme.
