In an effort to add a new revenue stream, Amazon is reportedly working on creating a standalone app for sports content.
However, there is no clarity on the roll out plan of the app, the report states. Moreover, Amazon already has the rights to stream games from events such as the National Football League's Thursday Night Football franchise and Premier League soccer matches in the UK.
Calling live sports “a unique asset”, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said that the company will continue to invest in that space. Amazon has also invested in other sports content such as original sports talk shows.
According to a report by news agency Reuters, the US audience is increasingly switching from pay TV subscriptions to streaming apps. Recently, Google’s YouTube secured the rights to stream the NFL Sunday Ticket and Apple struck a deal to live stream Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer games.
