As part of its attempts to develop renewable energy generation to satisfy rising power demand, India has approved the construction of the Dibang hydropower project, the largest of its kind in the nation. NHPC Ltd will create the 2,880-megawatt project. It will take nine years to develop and will cost an estimated $3.9 billion.

Hydropower has been classified as renewable energy in India and is seen as essential in the country's transition away from coal to help manage the fluctuations caused by intermittent solar and wind supplies.

When completed, the 278-meter-tall dam will be India's tallest structure. The project is located on the Dibang River in Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Dibang Valley District.

A 278 m high concrete gravity dam, six horseshoe-shaped head race tunnels with a 9 m diameter that range in length from 300 m to 600 m, an underground power house, and six horseshoe-shaped tailrace tunnels with a 9 m diameter that range in length from 320 m to 470 m are all part of the project.
According to experts, the Dibang project, which will be developed over more than 5,000 hectares of forest land, is anticipated to face comparable risks. The investment that has been approved includes government help for flood control and supporting infrastructure, such as roads and bridges connecting the construction site.
