Every year on July 26, India celebrates Kargil Diwas to remember and honor India's triumph over Pakistan in the Kargil War, which was fought in 1999. During this war, brave Indian soldiers defeated Pakistani intruders who illegally tried to capture Indian posts in Kargil. The 527 martyrs who gave their lives in the fight for the country are also remembered on this day.
The war was fought for over 60 days and ended with India taking back control of all the territories that were held by Pakistan. The day is celebrated across India with great enthusiasm.
In honour of Kargil Vijay Diwas, a group of mountaineers from the Indian Army's Dagger Division accomplished an amazing feat by climbing Mount Kun in a time-record and practicing yoga at the summit, which rises to a lofty height of 7,077 meters. “The journey commenced on July 8, when the team was flagged off from Baramulla by Maj Gen Rajesh Sethi, SM, VSM, GOC 19 Infantry Division. Setting off from the base camp on July 11, the brave mountaineers led by Col Rajneesh Joshi achieved their long-awaited victory as they summited Mount Kun on the 18th of July, according to a press note by the Indian Army.
“Adding an extraordinary touch to their accomplishment, the mountaineers performed Yoga at an altitude of 7,077 metres, marking it the highest point ever where Yoga has been practised,” it further added.
To celebrate the Diwas, various celebrations are organized nationwide by government agencies and other organizations. Parades, and cultural activities were just a few of the activities.
