The CBI has filed a charge sheet against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in the Pul Bangash case for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots killing of three people and torching of a gurdwara, officials said.

Tytler "incited, instigated and provoked the mob assembled at Pul Bangash Gurudwara Azad Market" on November 1, 1984 that resulted in burning down of the gurudwara and killing of three Sikhs -Thakur Singh, Badal Singh and Gurcharan Singh - the CBI alleged in its charge sheet filed before a special court.

The agency has invoked charges under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 148, 149 (unlawful assembly), 153A (provocation), 109 (abetment) read with 302 (murder), 295 (defiling of religious places) among others.

On June 2, they claimed, the court will take cognizance of the charges. Tytler, a former minister, was charged with encouraging the mob that killed the victims. The special court, however, dismissed three closure reports that the CBI submitted. Tytler, who was mentioned in the Nanavati Commission report that looked into the disturbances, had voice samples recently obtained by the agency.

The case pertains to the riots in north Delhi on November 1, 1984, a day after the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards at her official residence. Arms dealer Abhishek Verma, who is facing a CBI probe in a number of cases, had claimed that Tytler had paid money to one of the witnesses of the riots and settled his son in Canada.

The court had ordered the CBI to conduct additional research into the case in December 2015 and stated that it would oversee the investigation every two months to make sure no detail was overlooked. Manjit Singh GK, who claimed to have received the sting films by mail from a businessman in Delhi, revealed them in 2018.
