India's trade deficit decreased to $17.8 billion, the smallest amount since January 2022, as both exports and imports fell for the second consecutive month.

The latest data from the department of commerce show that due to sluggish international demand, India's goods exports decreased by 6.5% to $32.9 billion, while imports decreased by 3.6% to $50.7 billion. The data revealed that non-oil imports were 10. 4% lower at $40. 2 billion while non-oil exports declined at a quicker rate of 8. 7% to $28 billion.

Indian exporters must figure out how to overcome the difficulties, according to FM Nirmala Sitharaman, who also promised that the government would assist them.

“The changes abroad or the recession abroad, are all going to be a challenge for Indian exporters. Indian exporters have to be far more receptive of what’s happening there and constantly keep engaging with the government. Otherwise, when our exporters are trying to be on their toes, such challenges can demotivate them. As regards, imports, we cannot be inward looking. Several MSMEs and large companies need critical components to come from somewhere else, we have kept ourselves completely aware of it,” she said at industry body Assocham’s event.
