INDIA eyes Oct-end for seat-sharing talks

The INDIA coalition of opposition parties made the decision to defer to its next meeting the crucial subject of determining the seat-sharing formula for upcoming state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, stating that the issue would be resolved "at the earliest." The process of allocating seats among themselves in order to directly challenge the BJP would be finished by the end of October, according to sources after their 14-member coordination committee's first meeting, which was conducted at the residence of NCP leader Sharad Pawar in Delhi.

The opposition parties decided to start “joint public rallies” across India, “take up caste census” and, significantly, make a list of media programmes and TV anchors who will be boycotted by the INDIA parties.

Trinamool Congress, whose chief Mamata Banerjee had at the last meeting in Mumbai objected to "caste census" being put on the alliance's agenda, was not represented in the meting. Asked whether Trinamool had relented to allow "caste census" to be included among the common priorities, coordination committee members said they would sound out the TMC leadership and CPM, another absentee, on the issue.

Abhishek Banerjee, a TMC official, was absent, and a chair was left empty as a sign of protest against the BJP's purported vendetta tactics. Because the Enforcement Directorate had called him in connection with its investigation into the suspected school jobs fraud in West Bengal, Banerjee was delayed.
