The Supreme Court asked the West Bengal government why it had banned the movie ‘The Kerala Story’ when it was running in theatres in other parts of the country and directed the Tamil Nadu government to specify the measures taken to ensure safe screening of the film in theatres in the state. When senior advocate A M Singhvi defended the ban on the film citing “a huge number of intelligence reports about grave danger to peace”, a bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha said, “The film has been released in the rest of the country,” the bench said. The bench said, "West Bengal is no different from any other part of the country. If the film can be screened in all other parts of the country, why should the state of Bengal ban the film? If the public feels it is not worth watching the film, they will not watch it.”
