The Indian government said that Canada had taken a humanitarian attitude to Indian students facing deportation threats after it raised the issue with Canadian authorities. Some Indian students in Canada have received stay orders on their deportation warnings.
Deportation threats have been made against hundreds of Indian students studying in Canada after they reportedly submitted fake admission letters. Official government sources claimed that the 700 figures given in the media were greatly exaggerated. "The majority of the students travelled to Canada between 2017 and 2019. After completing their studies, some of them obtained work permits, while others continue to study there,” said a government source dealing with the issue.
“It is welcome that the consistent efforts by the Indian government has been instrumental in the Canadian government adopting a humane approach and taking on board the perspective of the students,” he added.
Both here and in Canada, India has brought up the issue with Canadian authorities, even at the level of foreign ministers.
Since students were not at fault, it was frequently urged on Canadian authorities to be fair and adopt a humanitarian stance. “It was also pointed out that there were gaps in the Canadian system and a lack of diligence, owing to which the students were granted visa and also allowed to enter Canada,” said the source, adding that Canadian parliamentarians across political parties had spoken in support of students. “Immigration minister Sean Frasier has indicated that Canada is pursuing a solution for international students who are facing uncertainty. PM Justin Trudeau has acknowledged the need for fair treatment of students,” said the official.
