Experts predict that if the number of members increases in the upcoming decade, India would have the best chance of obtaining a permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
A recent study by the think tank Atlantic Council found that there is a significant expectation that India will benefit if additional seats are granted to the elite group in the coming years. US, UK, France, and Russia, four of the Council's five permanent members, have backed giving India a permanent seat in the UN body.
China is the sole nation that has not supported India's application for a permanent seat, which would grant it the right to veto decisions. The survey said that over half of those forecasting that Japan, Brazil, Nigeria, or South Africa will gain a seat also say that India will get one. According to the report, India has a 26% chance of winning a permanent seat on the UNSC, followed by Japan (11%) and Brazil (9%). However, according to 64% of respondents, the UN's most powerful council won't add any additional permanent seats before 2033.
