With the intention of including new languages for pupils, Punjabi language will be added to the curriculum of public schools in Western Australia. According to education minister Sue Ellery, students in Australia will have the choice of studying Punjabi as part of the new curriculum being developed for pre-primary to grade 12.
"I am pleased to see the ongoing expansion of languages curriculum for WA students and the development of Punjabi curriculum is particularly fitting given it could support students in key future employment opportunities," Sue Ellery announced.
The education minister continued, "Language diversity gives children a huge asset since it brings social, cultural, and economic advantages." Currently, Punjabi is being incorporated into the curriculum, she added.
According to sources, this occurs at a time when Punjabi is the language that is expanding the quickest in the nation. A census performed in 2021 showed that there were 80% more Punjabi speakers in Australia than there were in 2016.
Earlier Tamil, Hindi and Korean were added to the curriculum in 2021. Other than Punjabi, Hindi, Koranic, and Tamil have also been added to the curriculum.
