Odisha builds World’s Largest Hockey Stadium

“Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium” the world's largest hockey facility was inaugurated by Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik. The stadium is regarded as the greatest in terms of seating capacity and is recognised by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The Rourkela facility will host the Men's World Cup Hockey, organised by the FIH, along with Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. The tournament will be held between January 13 and 29.

The 15,000-seat Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, owned by Odisha, is surpassed by a 20,000-seat stadium. However, both venues will work together to host the 15th edition of the Men's Hockey World Cup.

The teams staying in Rourkela for their World Cup matches will be hosted in the Village, which has 225 rooms. A total of 20 of the 44 games will be played at Rourkela. Taking another step in its support for hockey, the Odisha government on last Thursday announced an award of Rs 1 crore for each player if the Indian team goes on to win the World Cup.

Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 is set to commence on 13 Jan

India's only World Cup triumph to date came 47 years ago in the 1975 edition, when the Indian men's team defeated traditional rivals Pakistan 2-1 in the final in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
