The Indian Battalion of the UN Interim Security Force sent a company of female peacekeepers to the Abyei region of Sudan (UNISFA). Since it sent the first ever all-female contingent to Liberia in 2007, this was India's largest single unit of female peacekeepers in a UN mission. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness at the Indian Army deploying its largest contingent of women peacekeepers at a UN mission. "Proud to see this. India has a tradition of active participation in UN peacekeeping missions. The participation by our Nari Shakti (women power) is even more gladdening," the prime minister said in a tweet.

He replied to an Army tweet that said: "Indian Army deploys its largest contingent of women peacekeepers in the United Nations mission at Abyei, UNISFA. The team will provide relief and assistance to women and children in one of the highly operational and challenging terrain conditions under the UN flag."

In 2007, India became the first country to deploy an all-women contingent to a UN peacekeeping mission. The newly established police force in Liberia kept watch around-the-clock, patrolled the city of Monrovia at night, and assisted in enhancing the capabilities of the local force. According to the press release, the Indian contingent, who consists of two officers and 25 Other Ranks, would be a member of an Engagement platoon and focus on community outreach while also carrying out other security-related duties.
