A powerful deep-sea tremor damaged village buildings in a lightly populated island chain in eastern Indonesia and was broadly experienced in northern Australia. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported that 124 homes and two schools were damaged on the Southwest Maluku and Tanimbar islands of Indonesia. There was only one injury noted. The magnitude 7.6 earthquake's epicentre was located in the Banda Sea, close to the 127,000-person-strong Tanimbar islands. In addition to northern Australia, the provinces of Papua and East Nusa Tenggara also felt the quake. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency issued a tsunami warning that was lifted three hours later.
