West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was awarded honorary degree of Doctor of Literature (DLitt.) by the St Xavier’s University in Kolkata. Mamata proposed a chair in the honour of St Mother Teresa at the university. In 2016, Mamata had gone to Vatican City to attend the canonization ceremony of Mother Teresa. "I'll use my degree to help the common people. She declared, "I am a commoner myself," during the St Xavier's University's 4th convocation ceremony. Mamata stated, "I propose from the state government a chair in memory of St. Mother Teresa at the university.”
