A rare handwritten letter by Rabindranath Tagore, where he expressed reservations about English translations of his short stories, was sold at a price seven times above the original estimate at an online art auction. Initially expected to be acquired at the estimated value of Rs 2 to 300,000, it went for Rs 21,13,212, following competitive bidding by several collectors. The letter is dated January 3, 1930, and is addressed to Satyabhushan Sen. Translation is an integral part of literature and Rabindranath addressed that side of literature. He says that the readers did not appreciate the translation of his short stories and he seems skeptical about it. Tagore also pointed out that his writing style is really different from contemporary ones. That might also establish a contrast between his and the other writers.
