A 58-year-old woman was injured while valiantly protecting her two granddaughters during a leopard attack in Aabki village, Tehri district.

The grandmother named Chandrama Devi, is from the Pratapnagar neighbourhood of Tehri. She was on her home's porch with her two 4-year-old granddaughters, Vaishnavi and Riyanshi, when they came across the wild animal.

According to locals, upon realising that the creature was a leopard, Devi swiftly rushed to protect her granddaughters, pulling them back while shielding them from harm. However, the leopard attacked her and attempted to drag the woman away. Village head, Shivraj Ramola said, "Fortunately, the cries for help from the trio alerted the family, who rushed outside and scared the animal away. Chandrama Devi sustained injuries but managed to keep her granddaughters out of harm's way."

Chandrama received initial first aid while being sent right away to a neighbouring medical facility for treatment. She was then directed to another Dehradun medical centre. She sustained injuries mostly to her face, according to doctors at the Himalayan Hospital, where she is presently undergoing treatment.

"While she had a few minor injuries, they are not life threatening. She was examined by a plastic surgeon and received seven-eight stitches on her face, where the majority of her injuries were located. Her condition is stable, and she is expected to be discharged soon," said a hospital spokesperson.
