The office of the President of South Africa has announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa, 69, has been tested positive for Covid-19 disease. The president has mild symptoms and is receiving treatment as per the announcement by the Presidency.
President Ramaphosa is fully vaccinated.
Ramphosa began feeling unwell after leaving a state memorial service for former President F. W. de Klerk in Cape Town on Sunday. It is important to note that the highly mutated variant Omicron was detected in South Africa last month. Found to be more contagious than other strains of the coronavirus, Omicron has sparked global panic. While, it is still to be announced whether the virus that has affected the President is of the latest Omicron variant, the President has delegated all his responsibilities to Deputy President David Mabuza for the next week. Ramaphosa is now self-isolating in Cape Town and is being monitored by the South African Military Health Service.
Ramaphosa has stated that his own infection served as a warning to all citizens of the importance of getting vaccinated and remaining vigilant against exposure. He has urged that “Vaccination remains the best protection against severe illness and hospitalization.”
South Africa is currently battling a rapid resurgence driven by the Omicron variant, health officials say as almost a third of the people being tested in the country were returning positive results. In early November, South Africa was recording about 200 new cases, but infections began rising dramatically soon after. The country recorded more than 18,000 new confirmed daily cases of Covid-19 on Sunday.
