Elections this year have been nothing short of a roller coaster ride, with major parties battling it out with regionals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP had put everything at stake, considering the government's unsavoury demonetisation move in November last year. However, Modi and his saffron party surprisingly emerged victorious in Akhilesh Yadav's Uttar Pradesh, defeating the Samajwadi Party's "goondaraj'.

The last time the BJP had won in the state was in 1991, during the major Ram Janm Bhoomi debacle. An overjoyed Modi said the support was "unprecedented". "Every moment of our time, everything we do is for welfare &wellbeing of the people of India. We believe in the power of 125 crore Indians," the PM tweeted. He also congratulated BJP chief Amit Shah, saying, "Amit Shah, party office bearers and state units for their exemplary work in taking the party to new heights." The party made a clean sweep, with over 300 votes. Meanwhile, Akhilesh has submitted his resignation to Governor Ram Naik. The BJP also claimed victory in Uttarakhand, with 56 seats in the 70 seat Assembly.

What came as a bigger surprise was Congress' victory in Punjab. The party won with 76 seats, in the 117 seat assembly, with Arvind Kejriwal's AAP coming in second with 22. The Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janta Party took a major hit. Congress also managed to clinch Goa and is currently leading in Manipur, with 15 and 25 seats respectfully.
