The Tendring District Council removed a Banksy mural, pictured, from a wall in Clacton-on-Sea for containing inflammatory content.
The elusive graffiti artist painted a group of pigeons holding xenophobic banners such as 'keep off our worms' towards a smaller colourful sparrow a week ahead of an Essex byelection. This county had shown an increase in support for Farage's anti-immigration party in the local elections: “The site was inspected by staff who agreed that it could be seen as offensive and it was removed this morning in line with our policy to remove this type of material within 48 hours,” the district's communications manager Nigel Brown stated. “We would obviously welcome an appropriate Banksy original on any of our seafronts and would be delighted if he returned in the future.”
The artist has not yet commented on the council's actions.
