India beat Australia by 99 runs in the rain-interrupted second ODI to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series at Holkar Stadium in Indore. Batting first, India amassed 399 with centuries from Shubman Gill and Shreyas Gill after being asked to bat first. Leading the team in the first two games of the three-match series, KL Rahul made 52 off 38 balls, Ishan Kishan contributed an 18-ball 31, while Suryakumar Yadav needed just 37 balls to score 72 after reaching his half-century in 24 deliveries. Set a revised target of 317 in 33 overs after the day's second rain interruption, Australia were all out for 217 in 28.2 overs.
Chasing a target of 400, Australia innings got off to a bad start as Prasidh Krishna (2-56), who replaced Jasprit Bumrah, dismissed Matthew Short for 9 and stand-in skipper Steve Smith (0) off back-to-back deliveries in the second over.
With Australia at 56-2 after nine overs, another rain break of more than an hour - the second of the day - meant the match started losing overs and the revised target of 317 in 33 overs became an even more uphill task for the Aussies. After resumption, they had to score another 261 runs in 24 overs which was almost 11 runs per over but they kept losing wickets and were eventually bowled out for 217 to lose by 99 runs via DL method.
Earlier, Gill’s 104 in 97 balls came with the help of six fours and four sixes while Iyer’s 90-ball 105 was laced with 11 fours and three sixes. The carnage didn’t stop with Gill and Iyer’s departure as stand-in skipper KL Rahul (52) and Suryakumar Yadav (72) pressed on the gas to make sure India forged ahead at breakneck pace.
