After three days of the first test, which was dominated by spin, India easily defeated Australia by an innings and 132 runs thanks to Ravichandran Ashwin, who crushed them in their second innings.
Australia had been struggling since scoring a subpar 177 on a difficult course, and India's triumph seemed certain as the home team collected 400 to take a sizable lead of 223.
Ashwin (5/37) then hollowed out Australia's top order with his nagging accuracy, and the tourists were skittled out for 91, losing all 10 wickets in one frenetic session. Off-spinner Todd Murphy claimed 7/124 in his debut Test in what was the only highlight for world No.1 Australia, who led World Test Championship standings ahead of India.
Rohit Sharma scored 120 which put India in the box seat and all-rounders Axar Patel (84) and Ravindra Jadeja (70) drove home the advantage on day three of the contest.
Before India crumbled for 400 just before noon, Mohammed Shami (37) contributed with a light-hearted stint lower down the order. The off-spinner sent back the Oz openers, David Warner (10) and Usman Khawaja (5), and Jadeja removed Marnus Labuschagne (17). Given the significance of the match, Rohit claimed that his first century since becoming India's Test captain felt very meaningful. He said, "It's crucial to get off to a strong start while playing this kind of series. I'm glad I could deliver a performance that would benefit the group. "
Jadeja, who claimed 5/47 in Australia's first innings and picked two wickets in the second in addition to his 70-run knock, was adjudged player-of-the-match.
