In just 19.1 overs on the third day of the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium (Delhi), Australia's motivation fizzled. Australia was dismissed for 113 in about 90 minutes of completely absurd batting against high-caliber spinners Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin, turning an intriguing Test match into a lopsided contest as India chased down the 114-run target with six wickets remaining to take a 2-0 lead and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Australia somewhat outperformed the previous Test in Nagpur throughout the first two days of this one. On a treacherous third-day Indian pitch, though, Jadeja was waiting to reintroduce them to the abode of terror. He took advantage of the obvious mechanical shortcomings of the Australian batters for the second time in the series to deliver career-best figures of 7/42 with Ashwin taking home 3/59.
Playing his 100th test, Pujara scored 31 runs (not out).
For a brief period, it appeared that Australian hitters had mastered playing in spinning circumstances since, at the close of Day Two; they were ahead by 62 runs. However, they lost the lead far too fast, switching to a deliberate sweep-only strategy as soon as Ashwin edged Travis Head in the first over of the day.
“There were times Jadeja was put under pressure but there was no sense of panic. He just kept relying on what he is good at and he kept doing that. He went for more than five runs per over earlier but he knew exactly what the batters were trying to do and was confident to put them under pressure and get them out,” India skipper Rohit Sharma said after the match. Playing his 100th test, Cheteshwar Pujara scored 31 runs (not out).
