Delhi Police charged former Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh with molestation, stalking, and sexual harassment charges. Along with allegations of abatement and criminal intimidation, Vinod Tomar, Singh's associate and the suspended WFI assistant secretary, has also been charged by the police with identical offences.
The six accusations made by the wrestlers were combined into a single FIR by the police, but their chargesheet, according to sources, outlines the investigation and supporting evidence in each case separately. In addition to some photographic evidence, corroborating statements, and technical proof in one or two situations, the chargesheet was filed.
Police filed their final report running into 1,500 pages before the court of additional chief metropolitan magistrate Deepak Kumar at the Rouse Avenue court last week. The court will take up the matter for consideration on June 22.
The charges against Singh carry a maximum five-year sentence, which is one of the reasons the police claimed they did not arrest him.
An investigator said, “The chargesheet against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar has been filed without their arrest according to the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in ‘Arnesh Kumar versus State of Bihar’ judgment wherein the SC has laid down the law regarding the arrest of the accused, more particularly in offences punishable up to seven years.”
“Also, the accused joined the probe and cooperated in the investigation. Further, no recovery or discovery of facts was to be made from them or at their instance. Their addresses are also verified and there was no likelihood of them escaping the trial,” the official added.
