Chetan Sharma, the chief selector for the BCCI, resigned after being caught in a channel's sting operation making crude remarks. Following this embarrassing incident for the BCCI, his resignation was 'received' in the anticipated manner by Jay Shah, secretary of the BCCI. "His situation got precarious. He had to leave. The kind of stuff he is said to have said in the sting made the players feel very uneasy, a BCCI official said.
In the programme aired last week by the channel, the former India pacer, who played 23 Tests and 65 ODIs, made some unpleasant comments about Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, former Indian captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and several other Indian players.
Chetan, 57, was seen discussing some behind-the-scenes information relating to team selection and selection biases. He also questioned the players' physical health. Chetan added that he disagreed with the team's management about the injured pacer Jasprit Bumrah's decision to play in the T20I series against Australia in September after recovering from a stress fracture.
Chetan had been reinstated as chief selector in January this year after the BCCI sacked the entire previous panel in November 2022 in the wake of India’s exit in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup in Australia. India’s selection panel now comprises Salil Ankola, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee and S Sharath. The BCCI is likely to appoint a new chairman of the selection committee soon. The new chief selector could be from the North Zone again as Sharma was a North Zone candidate.
