It was a game of the finest order as two rivals from the South duked it out till the final two balls of the contest, only for Chennai Super Kings to bag the bragging rights, pipping Royal Challengers Bangalore in a nail-biting finish. In a high-octane encounter where the bowlers had nowhere to run for cover, CSK proved to be superlative despite a gritty showdown from Faf du Plessis and co. On winning the toss, du Plessis opted to field but on a deadbeat surface where 200 seemed very gettable, Chennai got off to a rollicking start and scored 226. Coming out to bat, RCB were dealt some early blows as Virat Kohli (6) and Mahipal Lomror (0) departed in quick succession, leaving an uphill task for the rest of the batsmen. However, in du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell, RCB fought back well. A surprise promotion for Shahbaz Ahamad (12) didn’t really promote RCB’s cause, but impressive knocks from Dinesh Karthik (28) and impact player Suyash Prabhudessai (19) helped RCB get a lot closer to the target in the end, only to fall short by 8 runs.
Rajasthan score first win over Titans
The Rajasthan Royals beat Gujarat Titans with a three wicket win against the defending champions in Ahmedabad on Sunday. West Indies batsman Shimron Hetmyer did the unthinkable by reversing the game and finishing in style. This is the first time the two teams have met since last season. While avenging that loss, Sanju Samson led the offense 60 out of 32 balls. When no batsman survived at Md Sami’s turn stop, Samson endured. The Royal family was in trouble after Dhruv Jurel and Ravichandran Ashwin were quickly removed. But Hetmyer miraculously brought the Royals back to victory. The Royals won the game with four more balls. From playing their lowest game of the season to beating the defending champions and maintaining an undisputed lead in the IPL standings, the RR has shown why they’re an All-Star team.
MI steal Venky's thunder
Venkatesh Iyer became the first Kolkata Knight Riders’ batter to score a century since Brendon McCullum’s blitzkrieg of 158 on the first day of the IPL way back in 2008 , but in the end his knock fell short after a collective batting effort saw Mumbai Indians canter to a convincing five-wicket win at the Wankhede Stadium. MI chased down the target of 186 in 17. 4 overs thanks to useful contributions by their top-five, who before the start of the tournament were tipped to be the most dangerous batting unit in this edition but hadn’t clicked as a unit. On Sunday, in front of the capacity crowd, they finally came good and took MI over the line.
Delhi suffer fifth straight loss
Delhi Capitals fell to their fifth loss in this IPL after a 23-run defeat at the hands of a Virat Kohli-inspired Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kohli smashed 50 to guide hosts Bangalore to 174-6, a total their bowlers defended by restricting Delhi to 151-9. Kohli struck his third half-century of the season before other Bangalore batsmen including skipper Faf du Plessis (22), Mahipal Lomror (26), Glenn Maxwell (24) and Shahbaz Ahmed (20 not out) boosted the total. David Warner's Delhi remain winless, and bottom of the 10-team table. But the skipper saw glimmers of hope in the performance. The Australian opener said: "Things aren't working at the moment but teams have come back from five-nothing, so hopefully we can be that second team."
Raza, Shahrukh drag Punjab over the line
Though Punjab Kings missed the services of regular skipper and opener Shikhar Dhawan due to a niggle, Sikandar Raza stood up to hit his first IPL fifty while Shahrukh Khan applied finishing touches with a late cameo to take the side to a two-wicket triumph over Lucknow Super Giants.
After stand-in captain Sam Curran and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada picked 3-31 and 2-34 respectively to keep Lucknow Super Giants to 159/8, Raza hit 57 off 41 balls to bring Punjab’s chase on track, followed by Shahrukh slamming 23 not out to ensure the side’s third victory this season.
Sunrisers beat Kolkata
Harry Brook shone with maiden IPL century as Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 23 runs at Eden Gardens on Friday. Nitish Rana's 75 and Rinku Singh's 58 not out went in vain as KKR were restricted at 205 for 7 in chase of 229. Earlier, Harry Brook scored 100 not out off 55 balls as SRH posted 228 for 4 in 20 overs. Aiden Markram also helped the team's cause with a 50-run knock off 26 balls. KKR captain Nitish Rana had won the toss and opted to bowl.
