India was once described as a rich country with masses of poor of people. Poverty is widespread, despite a significant reduction in numbers since the economy was opened up in 1991. Much, admittedly, has been done, but only faster economic growth can guarantee poverty alleviation to tolerable levels. The challenge is not to leave everything to the government.
In the interim, people blessed with wealth, whatever the variables, can help their less fortunate brothers and sisters by contributing generously to education and health care to those most deprived, for that is where they are most vulnerable.
The glad tidings tell quantum rise of individual benefactors, according to a Bain-Dasra report, which specializes in tracing the trajectory of philanthropy. Long may this progress prosper.
