Funeral Attire?

In Hindu culture it seems customary to dress casually at funerals with white or light colours being the preferred norm for both males and females. There were I am sure reasons in the old days for the casual attire like getting rid of the funeral clothes or washing them before getting home etc.

One could argue that it does not matter what one wears but what is more important is that one has turned up at the funeral to pay respect to the deceased and provide support to the family. However in the UK, over recent years I have noticed that the casual clothing has become quite extreme. It is not uncommon to see men in their jogging bottoms, tee shirt and trainers. One would not normally go to parties or to a friend’s house for dinner wearing such clothes so why at funerals which are supposed to be solemn and serious occasions? We have over the years picked up many good habits from the host community and whilst I am not advocating black suits and ties, perhaps we should at least try to dress smartly to reflect the seriousness of the occasion?
