Congratultaions to Sajid Javid, an Asian, for landing the top job, for being promoted to the much coveted post of home secretary of the United Kingdom. He was promoted to this post after the resignation of the former home secretary, Amber Rudd over the Windrush immigrants saga.
Many home secretaries have fallen flat on their face over the migrants problem. Javid has said that the helping of the so called Windrush people will be his priority. However, the Home secretary post has been compared to a poisoned chalis, a goblet full of posion and not palatble for many to handle.
Who would have thought in the early sixties that the son of an Asian bus driver would rise to the powerful post of Home Secretary of Briatin. It would seem that the days of racial discrimination and preference of white people for jobs have long gone.
In the late sixties when we, East African Asians, arrived in this country after being expelled by the ruthless dictators like Idi Amin of Uganda, covert and even overt, discrimination was rife and even with university degrees, we were being confined to manual jobs in factories.
Even in the Civil Service, Asians with university degrees were being considerd suitable only for clerical jobs. For an Asian to rise to the top job of Home Secretary was something which could not be even dreamed of in those days. Next step for an Asian to become the Prime Minister of UK?
