Our political system as far as Brexit is concerned is going downhill. The government’s actions defies all logic and the opposition is failing to oppose it. People feel let down by the politicians. The voice of 48% is being dismissed. Simon Jenkins said ‘We can leave the EU, but not Europe. Isolation is no longer splendid.’
The referendum verdict is to be respected but the ramifications of it has to be looked into also regarding: the single market, customs union, open Irish border, security arrangements, loss of jobs, nuclear research agreement and financial services access.
According to government’s own analysis forecasting that a no-deal Brexit would hit growth across the country. Affecting the north-east going down by 16% over the next 15 years, the West Midlands by 13% and these were the areas that voted to leave. Soft Brexit will terms will not give easy one but no deal would send prices up by 21% according to the Guardian. Japanese car makers will not be able to continue operations in Britain if their access to the European market restricted or subjected to tariffs.
It time all the political parties to get together to sort out this mess instead of bickering and finger pointing at each other. Although time is running out the negotiations are not moving fast enough to meet the deadline of 31 March 2019. If the pace does not pick up then we will be marching towards a national calamity. The EU negotiator Michel Barnier warned that the UK’s constantly changing and contradictory demands are putting the transition deal in doubt. Now is the time to change tactics now to get a good result.
