Angkor Wat

It was all about Angkor Wat which was first a Hindu, then subsequently a Buddhist, temple complex in Cambodia and the largest religious monument in the world. The temple was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century.

I find the name of the programme ‘Jungle Atlantis’ given by BBC rather patronising, insulting and ignoring the historical existence of that great civilisation.

To compare it to Atlantis is to say that the Khmer people of Cambodia cannot have their own identity and therefore MUST always be associated with other ancient groups like Atlantis or Egypt. Only then can the programme be watched and become acceptable by the western viewers. This is false and a very biased attitude to hold.

It is also ignorant to believe that the BBC are somehow respecting or creating large viewership by comparing it to Atlantis. Angkor Wats MUST be allowed to have it own identity.

Atlantis is a fabled mythical city. Angkor Wat is historically real and exists today. We don’t want to paint a false picture that their story is somehow mythical.

I also don’t like the phrase ‘Jungle’. Yes we know its surrounded by a jungle but perhaps also suggests that the people were backwards and uncivilised.
