Guntur (Andhra Pradesh): In bizarre incident, an infant was bitten to death by rats at the government hospital here. Rodents bit the 10- day- old boy's left eye, fingers and caused injuries to his face. His parents have alleged that the doctor on duty did not respond to the emergency when called, which resulted in the baby's death.

State chief minister Chandrababu Naidu ordered immediate suspension of all the officials on duty that night and asked the health secretary to investigate the matter and submit a report to him. Naidu expressed his shock on Twitter, saying, “Shocked and deeply disturbed after learning that a baby boy died after bitten by rats in Guntur hospital.” The government has already announced compensation of £2,000 but the victim's parents were demanding £10,000.

Chavali Lakshmi, the child's mother said that she had alerted the staff. “Our son was about to undergo a surgery but we noticed wounds on his right hand. Rats had nibbled them (fingers) off,” she told reporters. Naidu has also issued a stern warning to health officials that such incidents should not occur in future.
