Court rejects Sasikala's plea against expulsion

A court in Chennai dismissed expelled AIADMK leader VK Sasikala's plea against her removal in a party general council in 2017. The court dismissed her plea following an interlocutory application from AIADMK Coordinator O Panneerselvam and joint coordinator K Palaniswami, the party's Legal Wing Joint Secretary A M Babu Murugavel said. Sasikala had moved the city civil court earlier contending that the AIADMK general council held in 2017, which expelled her as general secretary, was not valid. The general council was held in the wake of the merger of the then separate factions headed by Panneerselvam and Palaniswami.

Karnataka CM on mosque loudspeakers

A day after right-wing groups demanded a ban on loudspeakers at mosques on the grounds that they cause disturbance to people in the neighbourhood, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai said that the government will implement court orders on the issue after taking everyone into confidence and “not by force”. The CM said the government will implement “in stages” Supreme Court and high court orders on regulating the use of loudspeakers by shrines and other institutions. “Also, there is a court order that questions why earlier orders on loudspeakers are not being implemented. The decibel limit is prescribed and there is also an order to purchase decibel meters,” he added. In July 2005, Supreme Court SC banned use of loudspeakers from 10 pm to 6 am.

HC reserves order on CBI probe plea

The Calcutta High Court concluded hearing in a petition seeking a CBI investigation in the alleged rape and resultant death of a minor girl at Hanskhali in West Bengal's Nadia district. A division bench presided over by Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava reserved its order on the plea. The petitioner's lawyer prayed for a CBI probe on the claim that the accused is the son of a panchayat leader belonging to the ruling Trinamool Congress. It was alleged that the girl had on April 4 gone to the birthday party of the accused at his residence in Hanskhali and was drugged before being raped. She died on the next day owing to bleeding following the atrocity committed on her.
