Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a three-nation tour, starting with Jordan at the invitation of King Abdullah II.
His next stop is Ethiopia from December 16-17, marking his first visit to the country. In Addis Ababa, the headquarters of the African Union, PM Modi will hold discussions with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on enhancing bilateral ties and engage with the Indian diaspora. He will also address Ethiopia’s Parliament, sharing insights on India’s democratic journey and the potential of India-Ethiopia collaboration for the Global South.
The final leg of the tour will take him to Oman from December 17-18 at the invitation of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. This will be his second visit to Oman, where he will discuss strengthening the India-Oman Strategic Partnership, particularly in trade, energy, defence, and culture, while celebrating 70 years of diplomatic ties.
India and Jordan set new economic goals, boost trade
Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his two-day visit to Jordan, marking 75 years of diplomatic ties. He thanked Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II for the rare gesture of personally bidding him farewell, calling the visit "immensely productive."
On X, PM Modi highlighted the strengthened India-Jordan partnership in renewable energy, water management, digital transformation, cultural exchanges, and heritage cooperation. He also praised Jordan’s firm stance against terrorism and its role in regional stability.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was warmly welcomed by the Indian community in Amman, Jordan. As he arrived at his hotel, supporters cheered with chants of “Modi Modi” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” waving Indian flags. The Prime Minister greeted the crowd and interacted with children before enjoying a cultural performance.
PM Modi met King Abdullah II at the Husseiniya Palace to discuss bilateral relations, regional issues like Gaza, and counter-terrorism efforts. He also held an extended meeting with Crown Prince Al-Hussein, praising his work in youth development, sports, and innovation. In a rare gesture, the Crown Prince personally drove PM Modi to the Jordan Museum, where the Prime Minister learned about the country’s history and heritage. PM Modi later thanked the Crown Prince for showcasing Jordan’s cultural legacy.
The visit focused on strengthening economic ties, with trade at USD 2.3 billion in 2024. Both sides agreed to diversify trade and convene the 11th Trade and Economic Joint Committee in 2026. They also discussed improving customs cooperation and transport connectivity.
In technology and education, the leaders agreed on digital transformation initiatives, capacity building, and collaboration at the India-Jordan Centre of Excellence in IT. MoUs on water management, renewable energy, telemedicine, and sustainable agriculture were signed.
Cultural exchanges were enhanced with the 2025-2029 Cultural Exchange Programme and the twinning of Petra with Ellora Caves. The leaders also explored direct connectivity to boost trade, investment, and tourism. Both sides supported multilateral initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and Global Biofuels Alliance.
