JALANDHAR: A Sikh police officer went against the norms of his religion, as he removed his turban to save two lives. The incident occurred inside the Devi Talab temple where a woman and her son came into contact with a live electricity pole. While bystanders were too scared to help them, a quick on his feet assistant sub-inspector Mohan Singh of the Crime investigation agency, untied his headgear and used it to pull them away from death.

Commending Singh's actions, police commissioner Arpit Shukla honoured Mohan with a Class 1 certificate and Rs 2,000 cash award. He also called him a hero of the force and said he would recommend him for a bravery award. "Electric current had leaked into the pole during the late-evening rain and storm. Passing by, the woman in her thirties came into contact with it first and then the child, of about 4, was also stuck. As soon as I saw it, I untied my turban and tossed it over them. It took so much force to get them free that all of us were on the floor," Mohan Singh said. The ASI was on security duty at the temple during kar-sewa (volunteer labour) work. The eyewitnesses applauded the cop. “It moved me to tears, especially when the woman and her son also thanked me,” he said.
