NEW DELHI: Top sources have claimed cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu will campaign for the Aam Aadmi Party as its star campaigner, but won't be the party's chief ministerial candidate in Punjab. Sidhu's resignation from the Rajya Sabha had triggered speculation that he will join Arvind Kejriwal's party and be its face for the polls next year.

While Sidhu himself kept quiet about his next move, there have been hints of him being unhappy with the state of affairs in BJP. Sidhu, who was thrice the Lok Sabha member from the national party, was asked to step away from contesting the polls in Amritsar during the 2014 General Election to make way for fellow member Arun Jaitley. He has never been on good terms with the Akali leadership, and has resorted to open attacks on the party and its leadership on governance issues.

Meanwhile, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh said he was welcome to join the party if he desired. "Congress party's doors are open for everyone," he said. Amarinder said Sidhu had a Congress background as his father late Bhagwant Singh Sidhu has been an office bearer of District Congress Committee. "When my mother was Patiala DCC chief, Sidhu's father was her general secretary," he said.

Sidhu has kept himself away from the media, while his wife Navjot Kaur, a BJP MLA, addressed media saying his resignation from the Upper House meant he has also quit the party the only option for them now was to join the AAP.
