Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India has been a success as a democracy because of its strong institutions, which have earned it accolades throughout the world. Nevertheless, some people are trying to discredit the nation because they can't handle its success story.

"Talk of pessimism, putting the country in a terrible light and harming the morale of the country also takes place," the PM added. "The country is full of confidence and resolution, and intellectuals of the globe are positive about India" in what was seen by many as a riposte to Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks overseas where he spoke about the international community being oblivious about the erosion of democracy in India.

The PM, who was speaking to the media, however, suggested that it should not be allowed to be a distraction amid the country’s achievements.

“When something auspicious happens, there is a tradition to apply ‘kaala tika’, so when so many auspicious things are happening, some people have taken the responsibility to apply this ‘kaala tika’,” he said referring to the tradition where people put a black ‘tika’ on the forehead of children to protect them from evil spirits.

Democratization can work, according to Modi, who said that India had demonstrated. He stated, "Some people are offended by India's democracy and its institutions, which is why they are opposing it." He also seemed to poke fun at family groups, claiming that a select group of families were holding back the nation's development because they lacked the dynamism and imaginative vision necessary to ensure quick growth due to their limited outlook.
