Chandigarh: Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated all-women police stations in 21 districts of the state, on Rakshabandhan eve. Also at the event were three union ministers, Birender Singh, Rao Inderjit Singh and Krishan Pal Gurjar. Addressing the function, Khattar said, “All-women police stations will instil a sense of security among women. Similar police stations will also be opened in small towns and cities of the state. This concept has brought Haryana on the world map.”

“Since women could easily narrate an incident to a woman, these all-women police stations would go a long way in empowering them to report what they encountered. Each police station would have a mediation centre to take up matrimonial disputes and the office of Protection-cum-Prohibition Officer will take up cases of dowry-cum-domestic violence.”

Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) YP Singhal said, “With the opening of these police stations, we hope that women in the state would be able to access a new statewide security system that promises an environment conducive to fearless reporting and sensitive investigation of crimes against them by women police officers.” Each station would have at least 38 police personnel besides a support staff of 8-10 male police officials to conduct raids, apprehend the accused and other related duties. The cops would investigate cases related to stalking, dowry death, foeticide, molestation, sexual harassment, disrobing, voyeurism, eve-teasing, abduction, elopement, kidnapping, rape and dowry.

“The state government has also decided to recruit more women police personnel in the police department. While the process for the recruitment of 1,000 female constables would soon be started, a proposal to recruit 200 sub inspectors (female) is under active consideration,” Khattar said.
