The Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) elections saw a resounding victory for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The AAP has won 134 seats in the 250 MCD wards, followed by the BJP with 104, the Congress with 9, and independent candidates with 3. The majority of exit polls had indicated that the BJP would lose the election by a landslide to the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal thanked the people for AAP's victory and sought the cooperation of the BJP and the Congress as well as the "blessings" of the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to improve civic amenities in the national capital.

The AAP national convener batted for positive politics in the country to ensure that India becomes number one country in the world. Elections to the MCD were held on December 4, with only over a 50 per cent turnout.

The election was largely seen as a three-way contest between AAP, BJP and Congress. But it ended up as a two horse race, with the Congress struggling to get into double digits.

Delhi had witnessed highly charged campaigning by AAP and BJP which made top leaders, including union ministers, chief ministers of BJP-ruled states and MPs hit the streets for door-to-door campaigning and meetings to garner public support.

The BJP, that has been ruling the civic bodies since 2007 had won 181 of the total 270 municipal wards in the 2017 civic polls, defeating the AAP and the Congress. The AAP won 48 wards and the Congress 30.
