History was made with the Congress riding the loser horse in two states, in the Assembly polls conducted in five different region. BJP roared into power in Assam, claiming a northeastern state for the first time. The Left took over Kerala while, Jayalalithaa and Mamata Banerjee retained their power in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. A small consolation, the Congress did manage to claim Union Territory Puducherry where it earned a simple majority along with DMK.

West Bengal

The ruling Trinamool Congress with Mamata in the lead, put up quite the show. The party which had won 184 seats in 2011 in alliance with Congress, was today victorious in 9 seats and ahead in 205. The Left-Congress alliance failed to hit the mark. In the Left front constituents, the CPI(M) lead in 25 seats, the CPI in one, Forward Block in two and RSP in one. The Congress has won one seat and was ahead in 42.

Kerala

The region did not disappoint, voting the current government out with the Left Democratic Front winning 46 seats and leading in 36 in the 140 member House. Congress-led UDF won 21 and was leading in 26 seats.

Tamil Nadu

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) proved itself tough to beat even with several exit polls showing it the front door. However, opposition party the DMK put a reasonably good show by leading in 87 seats as against Amma's 130, in a 234-seat Assembly. The Congress stayed ahead in 10 seats, and IUML, PMK, and PT lead in one.

Puducherry

The Congress-DMK alliance won the UT after what can be called an close fight. AINRC managed to attain mere eight seats.
