The ultimate goal of devout Hindus is salvation and they may soon be able to seek it online, as the Government of India plans to deliver Ganges water on internet. According to Hindu scriptures, a dip in the Ganges is believed to wash away all sins. Religious ceremonies are considered incomplete without a sprinkling of the Ganges water.

Communication and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said he had been flooded with requests for Ganges water to be made available through post. “I have directed (the postal department) to utilise e-commerce platforms and make arrangement for providing pure Gangajal (Ganges water) from Haridwar, Rishikesh to people. They have assured that they will take pro-active step to address cultural needs. If a postman can deliver mobile phones, sarees, jewellery, apparels, then why not Ganga water?” Prasad was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.

The highly revered 2,525-km-long deeply polluted river flows through five Indian states – Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
