Exit polls predict a big win for BJP in Gujarat and just a slight edge in a close fight with the Congress in Himachal Pradesh, while unanimously giving AAP a thumping win in the municipal polls in the national capital. The exit poll results were declared after the second phase of Gujarat assembly elections on Monday.

A number of exit polls on Gujarat gave BJP anywhere between 125 and 161 seats in the 182-member House, leaving Congress with at best 50 seats. AAP’s tally was projected to be in single digits or may just touch double digits, though the party is projected to capture enough of a vote share to split the opposition vote down the middle. In Himachal, polls were unanimous on the contest being close but divided on the verdict, though most gave BJP the edge. The India Today-Axis poll was the only one to give Congress a clear edge with 30-40 in the 68-member House compared to 24-34 for BJP. The polls were also unanimous that AAP would fail to open its account in the state. A win for BJP would buck the trend of incumbents being unseated by the voters of the hill state.

In MCD elections in Delhi, all the polls suggested a crushing victory for AAP, ending 15 years of BJP supremacy in the capital’s municipal body. The forecasts suggested that AAP could win a two-thirds majority while Congress would be left struggling to take its tally into double digits.

Exit polls have had a mixed record in the past in India and the actual results on Wednesday and Thursday will reveal whether their latest efforts count among their wins or losses.
