The Bengal government updated its land records on Monday to name Nobel laureate Amartya Senas the lessee of the entire 1. 38-acre plot on which his Santiniketan home Pratichi stands. The latest move in the battle of attrition between Visva Bharati and Sen over a portion of his family estate came three days after the university issued an eviction notice to the Harvard economist, claiming he had been “illegally” occupying a 0. 13-acre section of the plot. “A will has been probated in the Calcutta high court in Amartya Sen’s name, which says he inherited the entire 1. 38 acres from his parents. Sen’s name has been updated in the record of rights,” Birbhum district magistrate Bidhan Ray said. The document uploaded on the state government’s website mentions Visva-Bharati’s registrar as the lessor. The “remarks” column shows Sen as the lessee.
