In August 2021, Lakshmi Mittal, chairman of ArcelorMittal, accompanied by the company’s CEO Dilip Oommen, paid a visit to Gujarat’s former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. During the visit, Mittal expressed his eagerness to invest £10 billion in Gujarat. Mittal expressed commitment of investment of £5 billion for the expansion of his unit near Hazira in Surat while also expressing intention of investing £5 billion in solar energy, wind energy, and hydrogen gas production sectors, it said. The company sought land near Surat for the expansion of his Hazira project and solar energy project.
Now the state government has allotted 11,88,389 sq.m. of government land and 1,25,150sq.m. land near Surat district. In addition to these, the group has also acquired 44,819sq.m. government land of Hazira gram panchayat, 6,51,737 sq. m. land of the port department and 1,600 sq. m of another land.
