In June 2019, Mark Carney will be stepping down as Bank of England Governor, leaving many contenders waiting in the wings to take over his reputable role. There are many speculations about who will be taking the reins at Threadneedle Street, and there have been names springing up as being the next possible governor.

Indian origin contenders

Baroness Shriti Vadera, Chair of Santander UK and Raghuram Rajan, a University of Chicago professor are among contenders. Financial Times in a report claims Shriti’s pros lie in her strong experience as a minister during the financial crisis and a dynamic manager who gets things done, while her cons are believed to be allegations of her abrasive working style. Rajan’s pros include impeccable international economics and central banking experience especially from his Reserve Bank of India times but there are no indications that he would want the job at BoE. Rajan is the Katherine Dusak Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at Chicago Booth. He was the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India between September 2013 and September 2016. He was also the Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund between 2003 and 2006.

He co-authored 'Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists' with Luigi Zingales in 2003. He then wrote 'Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy,' for which he was awarded the Financial Times-Goldman Sachs prize for best business book in 2010. Rajan has been the recipient of several awards, such as Infosys prize for the Economic Sciences in 2012, Euromoney Central Banker Governor of the Year 2014, and Banker Magazine (FT Group) Central bank Governor of the Year 2016.
